B.I.O.T. was established as a Crown Colony in November 1965 comprising the Chagos Archipelago, Aldabra, Farquhar and Des Roches Islands. In June1976, all but the Chagos Archipelago were returned to Seychelles (and from June 1980 they were part of the group that issued stamps as Zil Elwagne Sesel). The Archipelago has no indigenous population, but from 1990 stamps were issued for use by civilian workers at the U.S. Navy base on Diego Garcia, the largest island.
