The colony originated in land purchases by an Italian shipping company which transferred ownership to Italy in 1893. In 1936, Eritrea joined with Ethiopia and Italian Somaliland to form Italian East Africa and used those stamps until WW2.
British troops occupied the country during WW2 and GB overprints for Italian colonies were used until September 1952 when Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia.
Eritrea gained independence in May 1993.
