There was an Indian post office in Zanzibar for a few months from November 1868 and Indian stamps were used for a service administered from British East Africa from 1875. Zanzibar was a British proctectorate until independence in December 1963
After a revolt in January 1964, a republic was established. Zanzibar joined Tanganyika in April 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, later renamed Tanzania.
