Walker (see Syria) writes, " ISRAEL #1, issued in 1948, is plentiful, even on cover, and should be in everyone's collection. "
Scott [1] notes that "When the British mandate of Palestine ended in May 1948, the Jewish state of Israel was proclaimed by the Hebrew Jewish National Council in Palestine."
Although not an original feature, Israeli stamps are noted for their "tabs" or sheet margins.
