Norfolk Island was first settled from New South Wales, but administration transferred to Tasmania in 1844. It became a separate settlement in 1856 and an external Australian Territory in July 1914. Australian stamps were used until 1947. Unusually amongst the external territories, it maintains an independent postal system.
