In the 1800s, the area switched between mercantile and British government control, depending on the local circumstances, becoming a colony in July 1874 and issuing the first stamps the following year.
Gold Coast was given Dominion status in March 1957 and joined with British Togoland to form Ghana which became a republic in 1960.
